Image of ladder in the middle of the road at Plaza Rizal, Tagbilaran City

While heading to Dunkin Donuts for my daily fix of coffee, I noticed a guy carrying a ladder. I assumed he was going to cross the busy junction at Plaza Rizal, Tagbilaran City

To My amazement he stopped halfway across the junction and erected his ladder as shown in the image above.

Now even by Philippine standards its in dangerous position. The worker did place a small warning triangle at the base of the ladder, so I guess that made him feel safe. I assume he was either a power, telephone or cable tv worker.

While quite comical, it does highlight the conditions and situations some workers are expected to perform their duties. I imagine that had this guy complained to his bosses regarding the dangerous situation he was placed in (on his own at least), the response would have been "Get Another Job".

Shopping Malls are often offenders in the Health & Safety department. Its not uncommon to have guys working at the top of ladders while shoppers are allowed to walk under said ladder. Electrical cables can often be found stretched across the aisle while a person operates the floor polisher (at peak times I might add).

OK living in the UK I have been spoilt with the attention paid to Health & Safety at Work, but a little more regard here to the safety of workers and the general public would not be a bad thing.enlightened
