Daily Life in Bohol
Tagbilaran City is basically a safe place for tourists and locals to wander around. Like all Cities there are areas best avoided and one should never let their guard down.
I have been advised not to walk alone in Gallares St. late at night, particularly near the pier area. I have done so and been OK, but if locals say its not a good idea then I will heed the advice.
Walking around town presents no real risks, you will encounter street beggars that may tap your hand and ask for money. They (typically kids) will leave you alone, if you make it clear you are not giving them anything but can be persistent and annoying at times.
Tricycles are safe way to get around, drivers are friendly and can take you wherever you need to go. Its normal if your white to be charged more than a local. If you’re here for a short visit its best to just pay the extra, within reason. If you are living here then you have to argue your case.
Night Time in the main City area has never caused me any concern, on the whole the people are friendly. If you’re a foreigner with a younger Filipina Girl, you may have a few unsavory comments directed at her. It will be in Bisaya and very uncomplimentary. Advice Just Let It Go…
The Plaza Rizal opposite Tagbilaran Cathedral is a popular place for locals to hang out at night. I have never felt threatened there and find it a pleasant place to sit in the evening and just chill out.
Use your common sense, if a street gives you a bad feeling then go back and choose another route.
For sure there is crime in Tagbilaran City, there are gangs and drug problems. I have been here for 18 months and not really encountered any trouble. I have never felt my personal safety threatened (yet). Stick to the main roads and you really should be fine.
