Tourist Spots in Bohol
Nova Shell Museum, Panglao Island, offers a fascinating insight in to the world of sea shells, especially those found locally in the waters around Panglao and Bohol.
Owned and operated by Mr. Quirino Hora, this fantastic collection of mollusks has been built up over more than 30 years. Originally started as a hobby, Mr Hora has turned his passion into a successful business, selling shells to private collectors and businesses world wide.
Mr. Quirino Hora even has two shells named after him “Bursa Quirihorai”, discovered in 1987, and “Primovula Horai” discovered in1994. Both of these new shells were found in the waters around Panglao.
With hundreds of shells on display you cant help but be amazed at the extreme diversity of shapes and sizes. One shell named after the Japanese Emperor Hirohito, is so small you need a magnifying glass to really see and admire it.
Along with the great sea shell collection Mr. Quirino Hora has established a fantastic gift shop, where you can find shells crafted into intricate designs. Necklaces, key chains, lamps, hanging shell designs, wind chimes, bracelets etc.
Nova Shells along with its museum helps the local community by offering employment opportunities. Many of the locals selling bracelets and necklaces along Alona Beach probably got them from Nova Shells.
I recommend a visit to this great tourist attraction, its informative and an honor to witness one mans life long passion. We were lucky to have Mr. Quirino Hora personally guide us around his collection and the entire Nova Shells operation.
We now include Nova Shell Museum in our Panglao Island Day Tour Adventure.
